The Whaler Lydia—San Francisco

As part of the Wastewater Management Program or Cleanwater Program an unexpected ship was discovered in the Pacific Raildock basin. Excavation took place at the foot of King Street in 1978 and 1980 by Archeo-Tec but the identity of the ship remained unknown. After extensive research the ship was finally identified as The Lydia, an 1840's whaler built in Rochester, Massachusetts, measuring 140 feet long and weighing approximately 329 gross tons. whaler lydia

The bow and stern of The Whaler Lydia remain in situ directly adjacent to Pac Bell Park, where it rested for several years after it retired from sea life before being partially dismantled by Pacific Coast Wrecking Company in 1907.
