SFR-114
is a major prehistoric village/cemetery site located near the
present day Moscone Expansion north. From the 1860's
to the turn of the century the location of CA-SFR-114 was bordered
by Mission, Howard, Third and Fourth streets, one of the most
intensely developed and densely occupied blocks in San Francisco.
This block was filled with dozens upon dozens of working class
settlements and thousands of occupants. Nonetheless, in 1988,
CA-SFR-114 was found virtually intact at a depth of 10 to 11
feet below present street level. Archeo-Tec discovered 11 burials
with over thirty-five thousand associated mortuary offerings
within 6 to 7 vertical feet of midden.
This
site offers proof that even though an area can be intensely
developed, a significant archaeological resource can remain
undisturbed below the surface for centuries.
