The
first archaeological site found in downtown San Francisco since
CA-SFR-2 in 1929, CA-SFr-112 was located in 1987 at 49 Stevenson
Street. Characterized by an undisturbed extensive prehistoric
shellmound, the site was situated 50 to 60 feet to the west
of the original shoreline of the Bay approximately 19 feet below
present sea level and 45 to 65 feet below sea level in 1849.

| Until
the late 19th century the predominate topography of San Francisco
was comprised of shifting sand, which dramatically raised the
street level surface height in relation to the sea level. This
phenomena demonstrates that significant archaeological resources
can exist at extremely low depths beneath the current street
level.
