The
Rincon Annex Post Office, located near the intersection of Steuart
and Howard Streets, was, during the later 19th Century, the
location of several boarding houses used primarily by sailors.
Excavations in the mid-1980s produced several architectural
remnants of and domestic refuse (crockery, glass bottles, leather,
metal) from these dwellings.
In
addition, an unexpected assemblage of Chinese ceramics was
found within this predominately white neighborhood, suggesting
a laundry or restaurant. The collection is permanently displayed
in the Rincon Center along the line of Mission Street between
Spear and Steuart.
