The
William Grey was a Gold Rush Era storeship that was used as
the foundation for a wharf near the intersection of Filbert
and Battery streets. Initially, Archeo-Tec discovered this ship
during a testing program that took place in 1978 and 1979. Historians
Roger and Nancy Olmstead, through historical research, identified
the ship as the William Grey.
In
1980, Archeo-Tec exposed and documented a large area of the
ship. To this day, The William Grey is preserved, in situ,
beneath the park along the San Francisco Waterfront.
