The
Crystal Hotel was a late 19th Century hotel situated along the
eastern side of Fourth Street between King and Berry streets.
The architectural remains and associated artifacts recovered
at the Crystal Hotel site afford a unique glimpse into the ebb
and flow of daily life in this industrial sector of San Francisco
from the final years of the 19th century up to the Great San
Francisco Earthquake and Fire of 1906. |

| The
recovered assemblage of glass and ceramic tableware, and other
items related to the preparation, service, and consumption of
food summons an almost tangible image of a dynamic working class
saloon and restaurant functioning in the midst of a vibrant,
growing city. This site also provides a unique opportunity to
examine the effects of the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906
on a working commercial establishment, in terms of the destruction
and deposition of the remains associated with this commercial
enterprise. |
