West
of the Van Ness corridor, the 1661 Pine street site contains
the remnants of a late 19th Century residence. In 1995 Archeo-Tec
unearthed a series of redwood floorboards, along with an assemblage
of historic domestic refuse and remnants of one or more wall
partitions lying atop and adjacent to the redwood flooring.
Analysis of these materials, coupled with the findings of
historical research, strongly suggest that the structure met
its end in the Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire of
April, 1906.
Although
the architectural remnants were not as well preserved as originally
hoped, the cultural assemblage represents a relatively broad
cross-section of the products and furnishings contained within
a typical middle class San Francisco household during the
late nineteenth century.
