The Von Pfister Adobe Site—California

The adobe store's origins can be traced back to Solano County's formative days during the second half of the 1840s. It is located in the town of Benicia directly north of the Carquinez Strait. According to one widespread story, word of the gold strike at Sutter's Mill was first disseminated at the Von Pfister Adobe in 1848.

If there is any veracity to this tale, the Von Pfister Adobe played an important role in supplying the first wave of argonaunts who descended upon the Sierra Nevada 'diggins' in search of gold and adventure. In 1986, Archeo-Tec conducted archaeological testing and served as an informant for the process of restoration and reconstruction of the greatly deteriorating Von Pfister Adobe Building.
