This
small, contact era Native American village site existed in proximity
to Gold Rush Era mining and ranching operations. Consisting
of two or more family units, the aboriginal technology recovered
comprised of projectile points, drills, hammerstones, and lithic
debitage. Historic artifacts found among them-glass trade beads,
a metal jew's harp and glass buttons-seem to indicate
co-existence of Native Americans and Europeans. Due to existence
of Native American artifacts well into the late 19th Century,
it is highly likely that the Native Americans in the Grass Valley/Nevada
City region adhered to aspects of their material and social
culture in the midst of an acculturating environment.
