CCO 235 —California

Archaeological investigations at CA-CCO-235, located in the city of Lafayette, began in February 2000. Archaeologists uncovered a Bay Miwok burial site, which dates to phase one of the late period, between 1220 and 1400 AD. Excavations yielded 40 human interments and a large assemblage of cultural materials including abalone-shell pendants, beads, bone artifacts, and flake stone tools and various groundstone tools.

CA-CCO-235 was an especially unique site given the ages represented in the burial sample: approximately 50% were infants. In addition to this, the site adds a valuable contribution to the study of the cremation process; approximately 50% of the burials were secondary cremations.
